Our annual competition for affiliated clubs - The Strathclyde Film Event takes place in it's usual setting in Carluke.
Films should be based on a theme and it's "What's Your Poison" this year - so why not come along and see what the clubs got up to?
There is also the One Minute Competition where the winner goes on to represent SAM at the next IAC AGM Mini Mermaid Competition.
And if that's not enough, we'll also be showing some short films from the last workshop groups followed by some terrific BIAFF Films.
Note: Membership fees are due now so please send your £28 subscription to Hugh asap - thank you!Born 1949
We are an association of amateur film-makers and affiliated film-making clubs from all over Scotland, the Borders and Carlisle. We meet monthly, usually from October through to June in locations throughout the central belt and sometimes further afield.
Our membership is made up of clubs and individuals and has a wide range of abilities and technical know-how. What we may sometimes lack in skills we make up for with our warm welcome and willingness to share our knowledge and passion for making films.
We are also an affiliated club of the IAC and the "Scottish Region of the IAC"
Whether you want to make or learn to make films, show your work, enter competitions or simply watch other peoples films we have something for everyone.
SAM organises many events designed to provide an interesting, informative and entertaining syllabus for our members.
Please feel free to come along to one of our meetings, and give us a try. We guarantee you won't be disappointed and our SAM teas are legendary!

MEETING REPORT
Well, what a meeting! John came up to a rather wet Edinburgh and although the audience wasn't as large as we'd hoped for - everyone certainly enjoyed his presentation.
With such a varied mix of films, John certainly keeps himself challenged with the projects he takes on - from animations to rock band music videos! From documentaries to holiday films with a twist!
A very professional approach to his presentation and everyone had a very entertaining afternoon.
A full report will appear in the next SAM NEWS.
We've are very excited to announce that John Roberts is coming to SAM!! We've been trying for ages to get John up to Scotland and we're very pleased that it's finally going to happen!
John is a very accomplished film-maker and will be telling us all about them. We're hoping for a full house at ECVS so please be early to make sure you get a good seat!
John will be bringing a selection of films - some old, some new, seen and unseen for his amazing presentation - see you there!
This long-running competition is based on a set theme which has been picked from the previous competition.
The theme for the 2018 competition is "What's Your Poison?" and all clubs affiliated to SAM are invited to take part.
It's sure to be an entertaining afternoon and you don't have to be a member of a Club particpating to come along and see the entries.
Voting is in the style of the Eurovision Song Contest with Clubs that have entered giving their results - and can sometimes be tense!
The winner of the One Minute Film Compeition will go forward to represent SAM in the Mini Mermaid Competition, at the IAC AGM Weekend.
With a change of venue this year but still with an emphasis on fun, frolics and good food, members will be entertained with a hand-picked selection of films, a fun quiz and of course, a tombola with lots of prizes - you'll have the best pre-Christmas afternoon Dinner possible!
We've managed to keep the price for this event to a very low charge of only £13.00 for starter, dinner & tea/coffee.
Come along to the January meeting and bring along a film! It's a non-competitive meeting and all about the friendships we've all made in SAM.
Get welcomed in with a warm cuppa and have a blether with friends. Then we'll be showing some films from friends and members but in a purely non-competitive way so dig out that wee film that hasn't been seen for a while and hopefully we'll get to show it.
Shorter films will have a better chance of being shown - and while we might like to see your 45 minute documentary about spiders in Outer Mongolia, short films rule for this event!
If you can't make it to the meeting - why not send your film in to be shown? It's bound to be a very entertaining afternoon.
There will also be the infamous SAM Tea at the break!
Come along and listen to what's involved in the work of a Voice Over Artist. Diane Brooks is a well-known voice on radio and television and will amaze you with her insight into her work.
If you're serious about voice over techniques for your documentaries - you've got to be here to hear what Diane has to say. Learn from the expert!
Come along to hear Rob and be inspired to get out there filming with your mobile phone.
Rob will also have copies of his book for sale which should make for some interesting reading.
Judge: Michael & Linda Gough
The one we've all been waiting for! Make sure your entry is in nice and early.
NOTE! The earlier start time of 2:30pm We want to show as many entries as possible.
This competition attracts the best films that have been produced over the year.
Come along and see what other Clubs and indiviual film-makers have been up to this year. Our adjudicators are Michael & Linda Gough, who are well-known at SAM both as presenters and judges and we're really pleased to have them judge this years competition. This is the first year that the Members Comp includes awards for both the Novice and the Five Minute trophies.
The date & venue might have changed but this is going to be a terrific workshop!
Our guest presenter this year is Geof Cauldwell, chairman of CEMRIAC and a well known amateur film-maker.
The subject will be music based - more details to follow as soon as we get them, so follow us on Facebook to keep up-to-date.
Final details are still being ironed out but this is sure to be a popular event.
The price of the workshop has been kept to a very low £20 per person. Members of affiliated clubs are welcome to come along as well.
9:30 prompt - if you want coffee!
The end of another season.
Every year the Committee try to put together an exciting, informative and competitive syllabus - but we do need some help to acheive this!
Organisations, like SAM, can't succeed if there's very little input from its members. Getting involved couldn't be easier - Just come along to the AGM!
You can volunteer for the Committee, or if that's not for you, but you have ideas that you think the Committee should be exploring and possibly adding to next years Syllabus - speak up and let us know! You can also write articles for the Newsletter about your filming or your Club or help out at the Events!
None of the events "just" happen, there is alot of discussion and plannng that happens behind the scenes - why not be part of it?
There will also be a presentation of award certificates and trophies to the all the winners from the season, followed by a showing of the winning films.

Whether that's one of our own putting on a film presentation or entertaining our well-travelled guest speakers.
Our resources allow us to bring the very best amateur film-makers to Scotland for our members to learn related skills such as lighting, sound, filming techniques - and we always attract the very best there is.
Being in the Committee is not an arduous task - with only a couple of meetings to attend (usually in Edinburgh or via Skype) and we would love to have some new faces on board.

SAM organises many event designed to provide an interesting, informative and entertaining syllabus for our members
We've been around a while, in fact, you might be surprised to hear that we've been around a long time and we have always supported the aims and ambitions of amateur film-makers.
Founded as "The Scottish Association of Amateur Cinematographers" (SAAC) in 1949 by a group of cine enthusiasts, mainly for the purpose of sharing experiences and possibly holding a festival or competition.
After a preliminary meeting the SAAC was formally constituted on the 17th December 1949 with Frank Marshall, a well known businessman and enthusiastic filmmaker, elected as Chairman. Right from the start the membership was to include individuals and corporate members such as clubs, societies and groups - a practice that continues to this day. The subscription was set at ten shillings (50p) for individuals and £1 for the corporate members. Accommodation was provided by the Scottish Film Council (SFC) at their premises in 16 Woodside Terrace in Glasgow.
