In spite of some dire weather forecasts there was a large turnout at the Alva Parklands Community Centre on Sunday 1st February for the annual Five Minute competition.

The only stipulations for this competition are that the member (or Club) enter a film no longer than FIVE minutes (inc titles and credits). And he popularity of this competition shows that many of our members find this a very entertaining competiton to enter as yer after year the entries get better and better.

This year the adjudicator was Derek Mathieson FACI., a member of Darlington Moviemakers, who travelled to Alva to give his judgements to the attending members.

Derek was born in Inverness

and started filming at the age of 11 when he was given a Kodak Brownie cine camera for his birthday. He still has the film!

Although he studied Accounts at school, much of his early work was in the theatre. In Aberdeen, on a world tour with Andy Stewart, with Howard and Wyndham, and in 1075 he went to Darlingtin Civic Theatre for several years.

He now runs his own Accountancy Business and in 1977 joined the Darlington Cine Club. Having been their Chairman for three years and trasurer for ten he is now Chairman of the North East Region of the IAC (NREIAC) - he's also been on the National Council of the IAC for five years.

Derek is an acomplished film maker with many awards to his credit - included a coveted Scottish 8 trophy.

The films listed are as per the running order and Derek was sent these in advance of the competition and after they had been screened he gave a summary of his comments on each, before announcing the results:-
