REPORT BY: BRIAN SABERTON

The 2008 Strathclyde Film and Video Event
attracted entries from Dundee Camcorder Club, Perth
Camcorder Club, Largs Videomakers and newly formed group, XDL Films.

The films are judged by the members of the participating clubs. Taking account of the scores of individual members, each club has a maximum of ten points to divide among any or all of the films other than their own.

The JOHN COLEMAN TROPHY

This years’ theme was “Job Done” and strong similarities in the story’s were
evident with two movies even having much the same opening sequence.
This was quite by chance and very alarming for the film-makers concerned as,
for a time, each thought the other club had done the same story. Three of the films featured garden sheds, perhaps not surprising as the general theme seemed
to be that of hen-pecked husbands being “encouraged” to do jobs around the house.

The standard of the films was relatively even this year so marking was quite close
but when the votes had been counted the outright winner was recently formed group, XDL films with their movie “The House Sitters”.

The total scores were as follows:

XDL Films:                                “The House Sitters”   12 points

Dundee Camcorder Club:     “Cutting Edge”           10 points

Perth Camcorder Club:          “A Bridge Too Far”    10 points

Largs Videomakers:               “The Fixer”                     8 points

After the break, Scotland’s entries in the IAC Mermaid and Mini Mermaid competitions were screened followed by a final selection from the annual members competition. The Mermaid entries were Molly’s Miseries by Dundee Camcorder Club and Driving Parents Mad by Pat Lawrence and although the films did not win the competition it was reported that they had both been well received by the audience.

To round off the day Norman Speirs screened “Heatwave” by Alan Atkinson of Rugby. This imaginative film won an IAC Diamond Award plus the award for humour in BIAFF 2008.
